Cuso International volunteers work in Indonesia, Myanmar, Philippines, and Laos.*
Asia’s southern region is home to more than 40 per cent of the world’s poor. Poverty, inequality, development, political systems, economic structures, and social relations within member countries of this region are among the world’s most diverse.
Myanmar’s poor population number more than 13 million and the country’s internal violence and human rights abuses remain high. In Lao more than three quarters of the country’s population continue to live on less than US $2 per day. The countries rank in the bottom quarter of 185 countries that are listed in the human development index. Improving access to education and building skills so that people can enter and strengthen the workforce is part of overarching priorities to reduce poverty and build equality. Building and strengthening various markets and microenterprises compliments this. OUR PROJECTS
Cuso International volunteers in this region work on projects in the areas of economic development, micro-enterprise, human-resource capacity development, access to education, gender equality, improving health, civic participation and inclusion, peacebuilding, and natural resource management and sustainability.
In Southeast Asia, Cuso International works with in-country partners on development projects that are tailored and responsive to local needs. Partnerships include civil society groups, non-profit organizations, community centres, independent bodies, the private sector, and various levels of government. Projects are also supported by multidimensional national and international partners that work in cooperation with Cuso International and local partners. IMPACT
The benefits that flow from the placement of skilled volunteers on strategic development initiatives in this region are many and diverse. Included in these are
55 youth that have developed their skills and become actively engaged in development work in Lao. More than half of this group found gainful employment, five became full-time students, and six launched a social enterprise.
